Oreganillo
Background
Aodh Ó Riagáin was born in Dublin in Ireland. Creative from the start, Aodh never settled for a single medium of expression, acting.
Growing up in a post-colonial country brought challenges of identity and belonging, which found its antidote in frequent visits to the Irish country, where decolonisation could be sourced in the landscape, community and the Irish language.
Values & Style
In a world dominated by digital art, and an increasingly depersonalised arts continually encroached upon by artificial intelligence, the foundation of the work of Oreganillo. is traditional, and deeply human. Using a brush, pen and ink slung onto paper, Aodh brings energy and life to the line-work, resulting in a living line. This approach follows through the multimedia works produced by Oreganillo., from The black ink on white paper brings a stark chiaroscuro, which contains a degree of memento mori - regardless of the medium, this is work made by a mortal human, created in time and through time.
Aodh's values are rooted in decolonial thought processes. This manifests as a a lifelong devotion to post-colonial education and storytelling, an active solidarity with colonised peoples, a love for community, and a deep respect and worship of nature.
Aodh values a holistic approach to life and creativity. A creative mind if the body does not follow suit, the centre must hold - for Aodh, the continual process of yoga permits a sustainable creative and living process.
Inspiration
Aodh is deeply inspired, above all, by mortality. This memento mori philosophy is at the root of all creative works, and it is the ironic key which makes life deeply sacred, and the art made by mortal humans deeply meaningful. Aodh takes on the role of a psychopomp, the mythical character who guides souls to the afterlife - in other words, to ease the passage into stardust by providing pattern and cathartic narrative.
Aodh is also galvanized by pre-colonial Ireland, particularly in the animistic philosophy of the matriarchal culture, which viewed all things as links in a chain, in an abstract expression of quantum entanglement. This expresses itself further in Irish mythology, where Aodh's own name finds its root, deriving from a child who, alongside their siblings, was transformed into a swan and destined to assume this form for 900 years. Myths such as these reveal the handshake between the human and the natural world. This also contains the rejuvenating philosophy of continual rebirth, a hopeful assertion for humans who feel destined to remain in monotony.
